Air Guitar Championships, Slay the Giant, Gumball 3000 and Altered Barbie: Your Monday Morning Hangover
On Friday night, our Jennifer Maerz went from judge to spectator at the 2008 US Air Guitar Championships at the Grand. Hot Lixx Hulihan emerged victorious, beating out even San Francisco's own Awesome, who fought the good fight. Sorry, Awesome, but it's hard to top this:
"Hot Lixx broke a thumb in the early round (pictured), taped that shit up during half time, and came out to shred without regard to pain in the finals -- leaping from the stage onto an inflatable whale that his friends carried him around the crowd on."
Read Jennifer's review in its entirety here. Jen: I'm still waiting for that inflatable whale photo.
Things were somewhat tamer at Lower Haters Friday for Ferris Plock's new solo exhibit, "Slay the Giant," but only because you weren't painted into the grasp of Plock's metallic monsters. Edward Paik was at the opening reception and says that without Kelly Tunstall's doe-eyed damsels, Plock's creations seem more menacing than ever. Read Eddie's notes and see more opening night photos here.
Also on Friday: Crystal Akins shot some highly photographic people at the Rickshaw Stop's Blow Up party. Flip through her slides here.
On Saturday, Crystal ventured to Nob Hill for Gumball 3000 and ran into the Hoff himself, alongside dozens of fancy autos. Full photo set here.
Sunday was all about stuffing your face with Lechon and sago't gulaman at Yerba Buena Gardens, where the entire Pinoy population from Daly City appeared to converge. Pistahan 2008 was full of excellent Filipino food, nationalistic shirts (I know I picked up one that read "I survived the People Power Revolution.") and musical showcases that made this gal miss her motherland.
Also on Sunday: Edward Paik witnessed this year's Altered Barbie spectacle. See Barbie hump an iguana before Ken's astonished eyes here.
