This October, more Grateful Dead memorabilia goes on the auction block as the estates of manager Rock Scully and keyboardist (and founding Tubes member) Vince Welnick come up for sale at a Bonhams & Butterfields auction in San Francisco. Welnick died in 2006 of an apparent suicide , but his widow held on to much of his stuff, including items for the auction: "stage-played instruments, clothing, sunglasses, sound and stage equipment, backstage passes, and unique personal items."

Scully's treasure chest includes "a gold record presented to Jerry Gracia for The Grateful Dead's 1974 album "Skeletons from the Closet" - gifted to Scully from Garcia; a 1970s-era flight case that the band referred to as the 'office on the stage' - which housed all of the band's important materials that might be required while performing on stage, such as guitar strings and picks; two individual 4-color separations used to create album art and other artwork for The Grateful Dead's 1980 album "Go to Heaven" and The Jerry Garcia Band's 1991 album "Run for the Roses;" as well as two tie-dye speaker covers used by the band on stage throughout the early '70s." -- Jennifer Maerz

Rock Sculley is not dead. He's in good shape and making things happen.

I gave Vince Welnick a silver (colored) cigarette lighter cover/holder with a turquoise cowboy boot on the side. When I asked him in an email a couple years before he died if he still had it he said (quite tongue in cheek) He'd only give it up if it were peeled from between his dead cold fingers. On the night in Portland Oregon after a Tubes appearance that I gave him the item, he said "I must give you something in return" and he fished through his pockets and came up with a piece of sugarless bubblegum, which I still have. If Vince were around I bet he'd return the lighter cover to me. I'd like to have it as a remembrance of that night- would treasure it always.
