Debaser
The Knockout
July 4, 2008
Review and Photos by Crystal Akins
Better than: The millennium.
Punctuated by balloons, stiff drinks and your favorite 90s songs, Debaser at The Knockout is a place for Millennials to re-live their youth via Nirvana, Beck and Luscious Jackson.
“I swear to god, it’s the only legitimate 90’s party in the world,” said Jamie Jams, Debaser's resident DJ.
Drunken debauchery filled the dance floor as people jived and collapsed, bringing nearly the entire crowd down in front of the DJ booth but all in good times. If anyone knows how to have fun, it’s these kids. (Not to mention the intoxicated blonde who felt compelled to show us her tits every five minutes or the dude sweating and dancing like a maniac in his leather jacket.)
In honor of July 4th, last night’s theme was contingent upon the American versus British indie battle. Rotating on the decks were DJs Jet Set James, Jamie Jams, and Jessica Beard.
Looking cute is always key because whether you’re looking or not, Chris Brennan (resident photographer) is sure to get your photo. In case you want your own keepsake, The Knockout offers a photo booth where you: pay $3, can probably stuff a maximum of three people inside, and hope the strip of photos maintains its form in your pocket.
In case you need to give it a rest from all your dancing, ample seating is available and manifests in the form of little enclaves that can seat around six people in addition to bar seating.
Some Do’s and Don’ts:
DO wear flannel and get to the party before 11p.m. to ensure free entry.
DON’T get sassy with the bartender or he’ll throw it back in your face
DO bring your I.D. or the door girl will roll her eyes at you.
DON’T wear layers unless you want to subject yourself to sweaty armpits.
Critic’s Notebook:
Personal Bias: I am a sucker for the 90’s
Random Detail: Some cute guy spoon-fed me JELL-O shots from what appeared to be a Tupperware container outside.
By the way: The Ren and Stimpy Show played all night!
