Christian Bale: Mom Started It!

Erstwhile Welsh actor Christian Bale has been in the news a lot today, and not because "The Dark Knight" made gazillions of dollars and broke all sorts of box office records. Turns out Bale – who has donned the Bat cowl twice – has a bit of problem with his mom! Yesterday, news broke of a family feud at London's Dorchester Hotel; Warner Bros. went into emergency mode, and Bruce Wayne issued a statement denying he'd assaulted anyone.

Then today the – esteemed! – UK paper the Daily Mail published a report alleging that Bale's mother may have started the whole ruckus (that link comes via the Telegraph; the Daily Mail one seems to be vanished into the inter-ether).

“Christian's attitude is that this was his mother's fault because she became very provocative in an argument they were having. Christian was stressed, but he didn’t lay a finger on anyone," one source said. "Instead, he flew off the handle and cussed his mother. He just got very loud because his mother was saying some very outrageous things about him, and his wife.”

Bale's wife, incidentally, is the lovely former-model Sibi Blazic. Anyway! The big question, I guess, is what this will do for the image of the "Dark Knight" and Bale's long-term chances at being taken seriously as an actor. Over at the Los Angeles Times website, Tom O'Neil has a good piece about bad boys who have reformed in time to win Academy acclaim. Brando, for instance, did it by putting "on a fancy tuxedo and started acting all sweet and thoughtful." Could it work for the Bat? Does it even matter?
