Sunday Photos: Lucha VaVoom at The Fillmore

Photographer's notes: Last night's Lucha VaVoom at the Fillmore was Nacho Libre meets Arabian nights meets stripping guitar player on a pogo stick. The first fight featured El Presidente and Pube Hair Man in a raunchy smack-down that included a bloody ass and some ass licking...literally. From the balcony, the emcees provided witty commentary to engage the audience, describing the referee's inability to do anything in the ring but point and scold. They laughed about being in Japantown watching a Mexican wrestling match, of all things.
The audience was rowdy with fists raised, wearing masks, throwing back drinks and obediently yelling back "VaVoom" every time anyone on stage cried "Lucha!" The favorite fighting pair were Los Calaveras, the Skulls, which tried to kick some butt using their dinky miniature guitars. After a blow would connect with the opponent, they would celebrate with a song and dance, boogie-ing their blue spandex selves across the ring.
Beyond the stripping pogo man, there was also the seductive Arabian dancer and a hula hoop tease who surprised several straight dudes in the audience because when the clothes came down to nothing but a pair of nude colored undies, "her" chest was flat as an ironing board.
Lucha VaVoom was a strange and quirky mix of Mexican fighting and burlesque dancers smashed together to create a show that to some might be entertaining, but only if blood, masks and sex are truly your thing. --Ariel Soto
