Tonight at the Sundance Kabuki: Times and Winds
Arthouse movie fanciers should now regard Friday the 13th as their lucky day. Because today -Friday, June 13th- the San Francisco Film Society (presenters of the San Francisco International Film Festival among many other filmic delights) inaugurates their year-round programming of one of the Sundance Kabuki Cinema’s screens.
Moviegoers can expect a line-up not unlike that of the Festival itself, drawn from contemporary world cinema, including, in addition to narrative features, documentaries and independent film with limited U.S. distribution. The inaugural film, running from June 13 through 19, is the beautiful and touching Times and Winds, a coming-of-age story set in a rural village, the award-winning fourth feature from Turkish director Reha Erdem. The film was a hit at the recent 51st SFIFF, giving those who missed out on seeing it there many second chances at catching it.
For those who’d like to meet some of the Film Society staff and discuss ideas for future programming (in the fall, plans are afoot to add themed series), there will be an informal meet-and-greet in the Kabuki’s second-floor Bistro Bar, starting around 9:30 tonight (June 13th). Here’s your chance to pitch your long-desired Troma, Seijun Suzuki, or Gertrude Michaels retrospectives to people who might actually be able to put them on. --Meredith Brody
