Santogold: Get famous, lose your voice

One plus about living in San Francisco is we get to see the up-'n'-comers before they break. Which, to be even more specific, means we get to hear them before they ravage their vocal chords playing every damn festival, city, and even that wants in on the action. Case in point: Santogold, who was recently here as part of BFD. The gal's had to cancel a chunk of her current tour -- not due to anything scandalous as drugs or booze, but for an old fashioned rest of her damaged vocal chords. Makes you think of how hard bands work these days once they hit that hype point. Santi’s MySpace post on the matter below. – Jennifer Maerz

Hey,

I just wanted to apologize for all the canceled shows and to let everyone know first hand why I've been canceling so many lately. I know it really sucks, especially when the promoters don't let everyone know why.

The deal is that I've been having issues with my voice. I keep losing it and my vocal chords are a mess. My Dr. ordered me to stop doing shows until they're healed which requires an extensive period of vocal rest (no singing or talking). But seeing as how I already had a tour booked, I decided to try to still do some of the dates at least. I've had to rearrange the tour schedule so that it gives my voice some days to rest after each show, so that it wont keep cutting out on me.

I lost it 3 times in the last 4 weeks!

Anyway, I am so sorry to disappoint you guys. Trust me, it makes me sick. But it would suck way more if I damaged my voice permanently. So I'm trying to take it slow.

I promise I'll make it back really soon to every town I had to cancel!
