Photographer's notes: The beautiful North Beach neighborhood celebrated its 54th annual festival this weekend, and Washington Square was filled with jazzy tunes, cute kittens to adopt and a bounty of free samples to enjoy - everything from fruit juice to mozzarella string cheese given out by a large string cheese creature with legs.

Kids got their faces painted and had balloon flowers made for them by clowns, while the adults got their boogie on to the sounds of numerous bands playing on stages all over the neighborhood. At one point, two of the band members of the Steve Lucky and The Rhumba Bums band jumped off the stage to show off their hip moves, twisting, twirling and throwing themselves through the air.

Vendors sold their wares under white tents, some of which were inspired by the local murals in North Beach and pizza restaurants brought food to the street in order to entice hungry passersby. People sold buttons for Obama, and Cindy Sheehan, who is running for Congress this fall, was spotted campaigning at the fair as well.

The weather was lovely, the focaccia was perfectly baked and all in all, it was giorno bellissimo, a beautiful day. -- Ariel Soto
