Last Night: Youngbloodz at Milk Bar

Hipsters, punks, fashionistas, party people (but mainly hipsters) gathered at Haight Street’s Milk Bar last night for Emily Betty’s Youngbloodz – a bash featuring DJ Eli Glad, DJ LXNDR, DJ Public and photographer Jerome Pour Homme. You may know Emily Betty from her San Francisco party scene staples No More Conversations at the 222 Club and Blow Up at the Rickshaw Stop.
The $8 cover for the Friday event didn’t dissuade the large crowd from lining up in front the club. However, photographers seemed to outnumber partygoers on the dance floor. Girls in short spandex dresses and four-inch heels scrambled to get their picture taken as the main attraction of the night was playing directly behind them.

As soon as Public (Nick Marsh) took the stage it became obvious who everyone had come to see. Wearing a metallic mask, possibly in homage to Daft Punk, he had hands flying into the air - and soon everyone was jumping and dancing to the beat. Public’s the type of guy who is unafraid to leap from one genre to the next without warning. Spinning everything from Metallica to No Doubt to the more standard choice of LCD Sound System, he had Milk Bar humming.

After his performance, the bar began to empty. At last call I was given a VIP pass to Parker Day and Emily Betty Present THE OFFICIAL YOUNGBLOODZ/TITS JOINT AFTERPARTY. The venue was reminiscent of a warehouse party where the cool kids get to smoke inside and feel superior… actually that’s exactly what it was. The walls were lined with bleachers filled with drunk hipster chicks too tipsy or coked-out to stand. The drinks were nasty and the people were sketchy. It was a good way to prolong the night but it left a bad taste in my mouth.

But overall, Youngbloodz showed potential and Emily Betty lived up to her reputation. Once they’ve worked out the kinks, the night could make a great addition to this city’s ever-expanding party scene.
