Jesse DeNatale's Folk-Blues at Amnesia

Categories: Music

DeNatale.gif Jesse DeNatale had a pack of seriously amazing musicians with him Thursday night at Amnesia; they looked like Jedi. (Nino Moschella on drums, but I didn't catch the other guys' names. Nino had his own fan club in the house, talented musicians all.) The "Bard of Tomales" himself was in fine form, too, and the people on the scene who know and love music best were almost laughably beside themselves, giddy with the quality altitude. DeNatale played piano (rare enough these keyboard days, right?) on the first three songs, one of which was the stellar "Children of the Sun" from his most recent record, Soul Parade. Then it was up onstage front and center for a let's-take-this-thing-out-on-the-highway-and-see-what-it-can-do jam/tribute to Bo Diddley, and a jazzier, rephrased version of the title track of his first record, Shangri-La West. The guy sounds like Van Morrison, there's no two ways about it. Beautiful. He plays again, hopefully with the same band, at Café du Nord on June 12. — Hiya Swanhuyser
