On Comics: 'Dark Knight' is a 'Thunderbolt,' or Something
"Heads up: a thunderbolt is about to rip into the blanket of bland we call summer movies." So says the perennially overheated – and often bland! – Peter Travers of Rolling Stone. Like a whole host of insidery types, Travers took in the new Batman flick out in Los Angeles, and reports that "[The Dark Knight] creates a place where good and evil — expected to do battle — decide instead to get it on and dance."
Sounds a little like that old Madonna and Britney music video!
"Go ahead, bitch about the movie being too long, at two and a half hours, for short attention spans (it is) [or] too somber for the Hulk crowd (it is)," he adds, in a 3.5 out of 4 star review. A compliment, of course, since Travers dismissed "The Incredible Hulk" as "proudly pea-brained," to the tune of 2.5 stars.
As for the Joker, the Canadian Press gushes, "At times sounding like a cross between tough guy James Cagney in a gangster flick and Philip Seymour Hoffman's fastidious Truman Capote, Ledger elevates Batman's No. 1 nemesis to a place even Jack Nicholson did not take him in 1989's 'Batman.'"
High praise indeed.
