MP3 of the Day: The Cave Singers

In their previous bands, Seattle’s Pete Quirk, Marty Lund, and Derek Fudesco worked to rile up their fans through music. Quirk was the frontman for synth punks Hint Hint, Lund played in the short-lived prog rockers Cobra High, and Fudesco toured the world many times over as a member of the Murder City Devils and then Pretty Girls Make Graves. But in their collaboration as the Cave Singers, the trio gives in to their mellower listening habits. With Quirk’s quivering delivery leading the way, the band explores back porch folk and blues carried by Fudesco’s melancholic acoustic guitar melodies. There are no power chords here, no drum fills crashing down on your ears. Instead the band’s pastoral ballads offer space for quiet contemplation as they slip blue linings into silver clouds.
The trio plays the Independent tomorrow, Thurs May 22. But first here’s a sneak preview of the music: the song "Seeds of Night" off the Cave Singers’ 2007 Matador release Invitation Songs. –-Jennifer Maerz
