The Avett Brothers should be so much popular than they are. Like Band of Horses, these Carolina dudes have a knack for making indie kinda folksy, although the Avett siblings are a little more country where Band of Horses are a little more rock 'n' roll. Seth and Scott Avett (together with bandmate Bob Crawford) made a pretty incredibly record in 2007's Emotionalism, an album that updated rootsy American music with gentle pop momentum. The trio's follow-up record, The Second Gleam, is set for release July 22, but they're offering a little taste of what's to come with a free listen of "Murder in the City." The song asks that revenge not be taken if the singer gets murdered, and from there goes into pondering familial relationships and offering such tender expressions as “there was nothing worth sharing like the love that let us share our name.” It’s a song of bittersweet contemplation, and a very pretty little track. Listen for yourself here. – Jennifer Maerz
