The Weekend Hitlist 4/11 - 4/13
This weekend promises beautiful weather (hopefully the wind will subside completely), so there's no excuse for sitting around and watching "The Wire" all day. There's lots of awesome stuff going on this weekend. Here are the highlights:
Friday night head to the Castro Theatre from 7 to 9:30pm for the 2nd Annual Epidemic Film Festival presented by Academy of Art University. The festival showcases films in the genres narrative, documentary, commercial, music video and experimental. Complimentary tickets will be available today. If live music is your thang, the Independent has a show for you. Brooklyn natives and total babes the Dirty Projectors will rock out big time along with Vancouver's No Kids and San Diego's Rafter. Doors are at 8:30 and the show starts at 9.
On Saturday anticipate weather upwards of 75 degrees (they predict 80, but weather people always lie), so what could be better than the Northern California Cherry Blossom Festival? The festivities take place all weekend with a street fair all weekend featuring traditional Japanese cooking, art and performance. The queen program takes place Saturday and the Grand Parade starts at 1pm on Sunday at the Civic Center.
Saturday night Oakland's Xiu Xiu plays an all ages show at the Bottom of the Hill. Tickets are only $12. Doors are at 8:30pm, but the show doesn't start until 10pm. What kind of parent lets their child stay out that late anyway? If you have a car and horrible taste in music, trek over to the Event Center at San Jose State University for Taste of Chaos 2008 with Avenged Sevenfold, Atreyu and Bullet For My Valentine. Puke. Doors are at 4:30pm, show starts at 5pm and tickets are probably a billion dollars. Though, you can probably barter and give them your nasty scenester girlfriend in exchange for admittance.
Sunday at 2pm the San Francisco Kickball Coalition has their first game at Speedway Meadow in Golden Gate Park. This is what they say about it: "Spring is here, so let's spring into gear with some hard-kickin', fast-runnin', ball-catchin', friend-makin' madness at our Season Opener Kickball game. That's right kids: We're starting a no-pressure kickball league! What does no pressure mean? Exactly that. No fees. No fixed teams (yet!), no bad times. If it rains, don't show, we won't be there either. Bring food, bring non-alcoholic beverages (for hydration, we'll supply the alcoholic beverages for your dehydration needs), but most importantly -- BRING YOUR FRIENDS! It's supposed to be a beautiful weekend, so no excuses! This is the best thing since weekly picnics in Dolores Park and we want you to share in it. So brush off the tennis shoes, get out your gym shorts (bonus points for the extra-short kind!), pull up some knee-high socks, and get your butts to the field to KICK SOME BALLS!!"
