Justice
May 27, 2008
Concourse at SF Design Center
Better Than: Every other dance party. Ever. Including the Prom.
Download: All of "Cross." The entire album is perfect.

I'm moving to France immediately. If Justice adequately represents Paris I must live there because I don't want to live another day with out the sexier (hairier) men and infinitely more kick ass music. I want Gaspard Augé and Xavier de Rosnay to sweep me away to spend the rest of our days dancing at moustachey parties under the Eiffel Tower. More importantly, I want to watch them DJ, cigarettes in mouth (how very European!), every minute of the day for the rest of my life. They are simply that good.

Their live performance fulfills every expectation and more. It all started with a majestic unveiling. The stage stood bare aside from enormous speakers and something shielded by a large black cover. The cover hit the floor to reveal their DJ fortress, big ol' cross and all. The cross lit up, the lights started and the dancing mob went crazy. The beauty of only having a small discography lies in the ability to please the audience. They essentially played all of "Cross," including all hits (you know, "D.A.N.C.E," "DNVO," "TTHHEE PPAARRTTYY"). DJ music obviously sounds better live, so Justice in concert rocks harder than almost anything. They work it and their crazy lights turn the show into an enormous (sold out) dance party.

Philly's Diplo, a Mississippi native, provided the perfect segue from the bizarre opening act Fantasy to Justice. Arriving on stage he claimed he would keep us dancing for the next 30-45 minutes. That quickly became an hour. He's an excellent DJ. Not only does he play typical club music, but he managed to work in some of "God Only Knows" by the Beach Boys and a Nirvana guitar lick. At one point he asked if "ya'll like hip hop?" Of course they do. They're white, upper middle class brats that pay $32 for an Eazy-E t-shirt at Urban Outfitters. They watch "Flavor of Love." They eat that hip hop stuff for breakfast.

The opener, Fancy from France, played a hysterical set. They're a four piece composed of drums, guitar, bass and vocals (surprisingly, no turn tables). The lead singer looks exactly like Tim Curry in Rocky Horror Picture Show (I'm a sweet transvestite from transexual Transylvania). He wore red, too tight zebra print pants. The hot girl guitar player had on some wild fringed ensemble, while the bassist looked like a lost member from Interpol and the drummer looked like he'd be pals with Bret Michaels. Awesome. Both the banter and lyrics were essentially unintelligible, except for his frequent reference to "Frisco" and the last song called "King of the World." Their music attempted glam rock, while the lead singer's feminine voice sounded entirely too Cyndi Lauper. They were a little bit disco, a little bit rock and a lot outrageous. At one point the lead singer stuck his hand down his pants and suggestively grabbed his balls mid song. Now if that's not rock and roll, what is?

Myspace always introduces people to new music. They sponsored the tour, which became immediately evident upon arriving at the venue. First I saw the Myspace bus out front and then and I saw the impressive size of the venue. They crammed about a billion fifteen year olds in there! The audience served as a perfect example of why people over 21 hate all-ages shows. It looked like an American Apparel or an Urban Outfitters ad full of little kids trying so hard to seem cool. There was an abundance of 80s dance wear, disgusting leggings and slutty girls. However, they knew how to have fun and dance like crazy. At one point a dude snuck on stage and did the robot until security pulled him off.

All in all, the night provided crazy fun for all. Unfortunately, Myspace only allows shows to last until 11:30pm. That's the price you pay for all ages. Mom doesn't want to pick up the kids past midnight. Justice, whenever you're ready I'm waiting for you to steal me away to our Parisian dance party paradise.

Personal Bias: I am a dancing queen.
Random Detail: Diplo kept throwing shit into the audience. Probably glow in the dark. By the end of the show it looked like a rave.
By the Way: Justice is playing Coachella.

Dude says:

That was one of the worst things I've ever read in print. Thanks!

Melissa Baron says:

Well, don't read it next time. In fact, don't read it, don't leave snarky comments and we'll all be much happier. Right? Have a nice day!

chunk says:

dude can lick my balls. fuck that guy. I think it is well written.

Ryan says:

Hey- I was the dude standing to the left of you with the brown T-Shirt! I think you're view of the concert is dead on, but the girl guitarist dressed all in white WAS A GUY! And I paid WAY more than $32 for my shirt at NORDSTROMS, and I'm by no means a brat even though I am upper-middle class.

Melissa Baron says:

The guitarist is named Mom and I checked out some pictures and they looked pretty she to me. However, he/she/it was really androgynous to go either way.

As for the shirt, don't take it personally. I'm just stereotyping.

Where is the article about 99 dollar mufflers? I came here to read it but found this instead. This was a good news report, but could you put the piece back about the mufflers tomorrow. My brother, John, wants to look into it. Thanks.
