The Dodos pick up steam with their new Visiter

The Dodos by Jeremy Harris
It's kind of exciting watching the Dodos hit their stride this year. After gigging incessantly for as long as I can remember, the band has released a record, Visiter, that's earned Meric Long and Logan Kroeber rave reviews. A small sampling from recent weeks: Spin made the Dodos their artist of the day ; Rolling Stone gave the band positive marks in print, and Pitchfork elevated the group to "best new music status," saying in its review that "Visiter ends up being one of the most welcoming (and welcome) records of 2008 so far." With the Frenchkiss label at their side, it seems that 2008 is shaping up to be the year of the Dodos. -- Jennifer Maerz
M. Ward and Zooey Deschanel's She & Him Returns to SF in May

If you missed out on She & Him's performance at this year's Noise Pop Festival, you've still got one more chance. Indie rocker M. Ward and cutiepie Zooey Deschanel have announced a tiny little three city tour, and SF is lucky enough to be one of those cities as the two are scheduled for this year's Oysterfest. If you slip up again this time, I don't know what to tell you, but at least you'll be able to catch M. Ward on the solo tip at the Outside Lands Festival. -- ASD Staff Report

Coachella Update: Luxury Tents, Lifetime VIP Passes, Live Webcast

With Coachella less than a month away, the fine folks at Goldenvoice are divulging a few event details. Attendees with lots of cash in their cargo shorts can shell out dough for luxury lodging that includes a big-ass tent, breakfast served to you every day, and other things we don't normally consider luxuries like working showers and restrooms. If you're driving, be sure to bring some entourage, as a few lucky carpoolers will win lifetime VIP passes to Coachella. And if you aren't exactly one for overpriced tents, horrendous gas prices, and the brutal desert sun, AT&T has your sensible ass covered with a live webcast of the whole shebang-a-bang. -- ASD Staff Report

Justice
May 27, 2008
Concourse at SF Design Center
Better Than: Every other dance party. Ever. Including the Prom.
Download: All of "Cross." The entire album is perfect.
I'm moving to France immediately. If Justice adequately represents Paris I must live there because I don't want to live another day with out the sexier (hairier) men and infinitely more kick ass music. I want Gaspard Augé and Xavier de Rosnay to sweep me away to spend the rest of our days dancing at moustachey parties under the Eiffel Tower. More importantly, I want to watch them DJ, cigarettes in mouth (how very European!), every minute of the day for the rest of my life. They are simply that good.
Their live performance fulfills every expectation and more. It all started with a majestic unveiling. The stage stood bare aside from enormous speakers and something shielded by a large black cover. The cover hit the floor to reveal their DJ fortress, big ol' cross and all. The cross lit up, the lights started and the dancing mob went crazy. The beauty of only having a small discography lies in the ability to please the audience. They essentially played all of "Cross," including all hits (you know, "D.A.N.C.E," "DNVO," "TTHHEE PPAARRTTYY"). DJ music obviously sounds better live, so Justice in concert rocks harder than almost anything. They work it and their crazy lights turn the show into an enormous (sold out) dance party.
Tonight's South Park Spoofs Heavy Metal

Remember when we said that film director David Fincher is working on his vision of Heavy Metal? Looks as though Matt Stone and Trey Parker have beat Fincher to the punch with tonight's South Park episode. According to an SP staffer, the eipisode is titled "Major Boobage," which should be Heavy Metal's subhead anyway. Here's hoping the episode's soundtrack rocks just as hard as the O.G. film. -- ASD Staff Report
Dr. Pepper Promises Soda Pop For All...If Guns 'N Roses Get Their Shit Together

Oh, sweet Pepper of mine. GNR's phantom Chinese Democracy album has been floating in limbo for years, and Dr. Pepper is tired of waiting, dammit! So much so that the tasty beverage is promising a free can of Dr. Pepper for every single person in America (sans ex-guitar thrashers Slash and Buckethead). That is, if Axl and the boys can manage to schedule an official release date some time in 2008. Apparently, Axl fancies the idea, and says he would gladly share his delicious soft drink with ineligible Buckethead if the album materializes by the end of the year. Now if only DP can pull the same promotional stunt for Dr. Dre's Detox. -- ASD Staff Report
Cultured! Provides Gallery Hop Through Awesome Lower Haight Shops

ASD loves art and culture. Hell, those are two out of our three taglines. Get a heaping load of both April 4 when the Cultured! gallery hop takes over the Lower Haight. Bounce around D-Structure, Lower Haters, and Upper Playground's Fifty24SF for art displays, dope beats, and hourly raffles for prizes. Ooh, prizes. That should be our fourth tagline. -- ASD Staff Report
Alarm Clock Drama, Showing the Pain and Playing with Genre on This Week's Top Model
Even if I had Top Model potential I'd rather do just about anything than be on the show. The house seems consistently plagued with drama and every girl starts to doubt herself on network television. This week Lauren expressed again that she has confidence issues in panel. Duh. She's the most awkward girl there. She claimed "it's a huge inner struggle that I'm going to have to go through." Already with the drama.
Then Claire made a teary eyed phone call to her husband. Apparently her baby is teething and Claire cries every time she thinks about her kid. I have to ask, what kind of mother just up and leaves like that? She does! Though she says "I'd be cheating my daughter if i didn't go for my dreams. "She still has a particular fondness for discussing breast milk (as we learned in episode one), but tonight we learned her milk is starting to dry up.
Grand Theft Auto IV Map, Multiplayer Screenshots Leaked
![]()
As the April 29 release date steadily approaches, GTA-itis is everywhere. Gamer site Kotaku is spreading the disease by revealing screens from Grand Theft Auto IV 's multiplayer mode, as well as showing us photos of the fold-out map included with the game. Better find a Liberty City hospital to get that itis checked. -- ASD Staff Report

The Demise of Hyphy Discussed Tonight at Ear Hustle

Our recent article, The Demise of Hyphy, almost meant that SF skateboard legend Mike Carroll had to change his mini Pinscher's name. It also got a lot of Bay Area hip-hop heads concerned about their dread-shaking, short-bus-driving movement. Learn more about the crisis surrounding our number-one music commodity tonight at Ear Hustle, where our contributor who penned the story, Eric K. Arnold, serves as a guest speaker on the topic of Hyphy's decline. Think of it as a Hyphy town hall meeting. Click 'More' for the press release. -- ASD Staff Report
