Tonight: Local Chanteuse Emily Jane White Channels Cat Power

Categories: Music

It's a shame I didn't have space to plug Emily Jane White's CD release in print this week. The local twentysomething songwriter has an amazingly melancholy voice, which she uses to sing evocative ballads about tragedies of the heart. Tonight is the CD release party for her anticipated full length, Dark Undercoat, an album penned after the collapse of her relationship with a French beau in Bordeaux. While many a songwriter has called heartbreak a muse, White refrains from using clichés, instead using gothic imagery -- and a couple curveballs, like an ode to Bessie Smith -- to keep her songwriting fresh. Read a profile we ran earlier this year on White here and check out her music here. Then check her out tonight at Amnesia. Show starts at 9 p.m. -- Jennifer Maerz
