Howlin’ Rain’s guitarist seriously injured

Categories: Music

Howlin’ Rain is not only one of my favorite local rock acts, it’s also headed by a super good dude, Ethan Miller from Comets on Fire. The band posted some exciting news earlier this summer after hooking up a tour with Queens of the Stone Age. Unfortunately that tour seems to have taken a terrible turn, as guitarist Mike Jackson fell off a balcony in Austin and suffered serious head trauma. Below is Ethan’s email blast about what happened. Here’s hoping Mike has a solid, rapid recovery. – Jennifer Maerz

Hello everyone,
Howlin Rain have returned home from our stint as main support to Queens of the Stone Age in the South Eastern United States. As many of you already know the first night of the tour in Austin, Mike Jackson, Howlin Rain's Rhythm guitarist fell off the balcony of a two story metal stairwell. He received major head trauma, multiple hemorrhaging and a fractured skull.

We are lucky he is alive and has full function of his body, head and limbs. Once Mike came out of critical condition the rest of Howlin Rain left Austin and rejoined in Orlando, Florida to finish the tour. Mike stayed in the hospital for another 5 to 7 days with family at his side and is now back in his home town of Eureka, California, laying low and healing. Apparently head trauma is a fairly mysterious thing as far as time tables of recovery go and we don't know how long it will take for him to fully recover. We do know that he is doing much better than expected and the reports we get from his family tell us that he is moving forward in leaps and bounds.
We would like to thank all of you that by phone, email, cheers, thought or in person sent your love, good energies and well wishes to Mike and his recovery while we were going through the horrible early days of this ordeal and throughout the tour. And we also wanted to thank The Queens of the Stone Age and their crew and Dax Riggs and his band and crew for their concern, support and good energy that they all went out of their way give to us once
we rejoined.
Despite the heartache of trudging on with a soldier left behind, the gigs themselves were fantastic for us and we had a blast on stage playing for the Queens crowds and getting to hear great rock and roll from the Queens and Dax each night. Thanks again everyone for the good times out there that kept our heads out of the dark.
Be well and with love,
Ethan
