Ex-Black Dice-r Hits Bay Area

(Soft Circle performing live at a Doug Aitken happening at the NY MOMA)

Hisham Akira Bharoocha is an incredibly talented visual and sonic artist (his visual work was part of the Cosmic Wonder show at Yerba Buena last year) from Brooklyn. He used to perform with experimental noise rockers Black Dice and early Lightning Bolt, but now he makes ambient electro-folk under the name Soft Circle. The guy's music lands high on my recommended list -- he produces warm, meditative instrumentals with soft droning moments and slow, soothing human voices. Really pretty, trippy stuff. I bring all this up because Hisham booked a couple last minute shows here this weekend that you'd be remiss to miss.

He'll be on a bus at Oakland's Art Murmur Friday night (Aug. 3); at 21 Grand on the 4th; and at the Knockout on the 5th. Prepare for an aural brain massage of the Animal Collective/Panda Bear variety. -- Jennifer Maerz
