Devin The Dude: 'Beer and Rap'-Approved
Weed rap sucks unless it's Devin the Dude, in which case you can back the fuck off
By Sergio Ornelas of Beer and Rap
Thursday night I decided to head over to Mezzanine and get in a line half way down the block full of people chugging down malt liquor and rolling swisher sweets while they waited to get pat down. The crowd was repping real hard that night because Devin The Dude was in town and if you’ve ever been to a Devin show you know it will be one of the best things you will ever witness.
The long line was both good and bad because I hate waiting in line but I also hate shitty opening acts.
Unfortunately it moved fast enough for me to walk into a Big Von set that didn’t include any music newer than 1998. I wasn’t expecting it to be on some hyphy club shit but goddamn I don’t need ten Nas songs in one set. At least play me one fucking Turf Talk song, hell rep Houston and drop some UGK. Sure there are four Lupe Fiasco imitators walking around the club but fall back with that shit man. At one point Big Von did get upset that people weren’t feeling his set the way he thought they would but that’s what happens when you play the fucking Light. To make it worse he stopped the song and yelled at people to sing the chorus, great now I had to listen to shitty music and hear a bunch of lames sing like bitches. To top that off he followed it with fucking "Miss Fat Booty", thanks Big Von I’m sure in 20 years from now there will be a place for you on the soft rap station playing nothing but the best in easy listening hiphop.
Zion I was up next and to be honest I am not a fan of their music. It’s not the worst music but I just can’t fuck with them. They did some rapping over beats they made on a Sony PSP which was cool if you like seeing commercials on stage. They also performed some new song “Don’t Lose Your Head” that was kind of on that Bay Area conscious hyphy tip. I was more concerned with buying over-priced beers than paying attention.
After them some fucking new jacks came on and because they are so fucking brilliant they didn’t even say who the fuck they were. Dudes just got introduced and came out with towels waving. Rappers are fucking smart. Following the no name slackers was Willie Hen of Scarface’s The Product. On record he sounds cool but the live show was slacking, might have been the mics but the raps were hella muffled.
Finally I got to hear those first opening bass notes of "To the X-treme" and I knew shit was on. As Devin rolled into his verse a giant cloud of relief came out of the crowd. Devin went through most of his hits, "Sticky Green", "Do What the Fuck You Wanna Do", "Boo Booing", "Mo fo Me", "Sex Faces", "Just To See What I Could Pull" and the real clincher for me that night was "Anything". Personally that is one of my favorite songs ever fucking made. Devin performance is one of the most genuine things you can witness. I don’t think I’ve ever seen Devin not smile, his whole laidback attitude is contagious. You just can not go to a Devin show and leave in a shitty mood. He makes you happy just to be alive, dude is fucking amazing. The night can best be summed up by a text I received from my friend, Thuggy E Fresh, at 12:36am that simply said “DEVIN IS THE REALEST EVER.”
