A couple dozen people rallied in North Beach on Saturday for the annual Paul Reubens Day celebration. People dressed in costume as Paul Reubens’ character, Pee-wee Herman, sprayed each other with whipped cream, chased each other with a rubber phallus, and marched down the street yelling, “Happy Paul Reubens Day!”

It was a full celebration of Paul Reubens — his career as Pee-wee Herman and his infamous arrest for masturbating in a porn theater in the early 90’s. So masturbation, of course, was the event’s main squeeze.

“If people can’t touch themselves without guilt, then we’re all being oppressed,” event organizer Sadie Lune said in an interview the day before.

But for the outdoor parade, Paul Reubens Day participants mellowed the masturbatory activity to acts of comedy. Highlights included squirting the street with hand lotion and spanking a stuffed monkey.

The mini parade honked and ha-ha’d through sardined streets. Pee-wees of all kinds marched past shoppers, past people eating in front of restaurants, and even right through the North Beach Jazz Festival going on in Washington Square Park. It flabbergasted tourists, worried conservatives, and delighted just about everybody else.

Lune and fellow organizers first conceived of Paul Reubens Day as a prank. The idea was to invade porn theaters dressed as Pew-wee, perhaps wielding bottles of hand lotion. But porn theaters have become scarce because no one wants to go to a theater where you have to “butter your own popcorn.” So organizers took it to the streets where they could create a whole parade of Pee-wee, with stops including everything from ice cream parlors to peep shows.

At a bar about half-way through the tour, Lune garnered the group’s attention. Just like the original Pee-wee Herman show, Lune announced that there would be a word of the day, and that day it was “thing.” Lune reminded all the “boys and girls” that when they hear the word of the day, “scream real loud!” One Pee-wee mockingly replied, “Yeah, cream real loud!”

Paul Reubens Day culminated in a party that benefited the St. James Infirmary and the Center for Sex and Culture.

Word about this annual event has spread to Paul Reubens himself. Lune met Reubens the last time he was in town and talked to him about Paul Reubens Day. “He seemed good natured and tolerant about it.” Lune says. “I have a lot of respect for him and I wouldn’t want him to be genuinely hurt about it. If he was, I would stop.”

Lune said the event encourages people to, “re-embrace masturbation as the most basic form of sexuality.” Lune wants to encourage more openness about sex in general. Beyond having fun and honoring Paul Reubens, Lune said that the ultimate goal of Paul Reubens Day is to “spread the message of sex positivism and shed light on the absurdity of our culture’s view on sexuality.”
