The Veils, 69 Eyes, Rodrigo y Gabriela -- ASD's Live Music Picks, June 28

Rodrigo y Gabriela, 9 at the Fillmore. $29.50.
“If you are one of those music fans that look at instrumental albums as dinner party fodder, you are in for a shock on Rodrigo & Gabriela's self-titled debut album. It is the kind of holy sh*t listening experience that would kill all conversation as your guests sit with mouths agape, plotting to steal the album when you are in the other room. It is a breathtaking album full of captivating sound created with just two acoustic guitars; so rich you wonder whether Rodrigo and Gabriela are actually octopi.” --IGN

69 Eyes, 8 at Slim’s. $13.
“Although Angels is at a loss for redeeming qualities, the album does successful mimic a now defunct style of music. Angels would make a perfect purchase for that older brother who still sports his leather jacket with Misfit and Skid Row patches and a dyed black “devil lock” haircut, and who won’t move out of his parents basement. Creature of the night beware, The 69 Eyes are coming whether or not anyone’s listening.” --Spill

The Veils, 9 at Café Du Nord. $12.
“Such proselytizing is always more convincing when it's punctuated with big bangs, and the reconstituted Veils deliver them with such startling proficiency-- the spaghetti-western cavalry charge of "Not Yet", the lightning-crash clamor of "Pan", the horse-whipped guitar/organ shocks of the title track-- that they make more stately romantique turns like "A Birthday Present" and "One Night on Earth" sound like the work of a different, more typical Britpop band. But then Nux Vomica is so focused on the big picture, it never gets undermined by the small stuff.” --Pitchfork
