Note to Self: Get Red Cowboy Boots

He likes Air Supply. He’s looking over your shoulder to see what’s on your iPod. And if you’re a hot woman wearing a business suit and red cowboy boots on an airplane experiencing extreme turbulence, he’ll hold your hand. Sherman Alexie is the former World Heavyweight Champion of Poetry, and therefore a complex guy. During a reading from his new novel, Flight, last night at the Roxie, the “ambiguously ethnic”-looking author (he’s a Spokane/Coeur d'Alene Indian) told jokes maligning everyone from Iraqis to the husbands of hot women in red cowboy boots, but took it too far for the audience when he made fun of poetry professors.

“That’s what gets the Berkeley hiss?” he shot back. “Poetry professors?” Sir yes sir! Don’t fuck with poetry professors around here! The novel is depressing and funny by turns, as usual, while telling the story of a homicidally pissed-off kid with bad acne and a thing for time travel. If you want to stalk Alexie, he’ll be at the National Conference on Race and Ethnicity (WARNING: Academic conference!!! Hella boring!!! Don’t go.) This post is amusical, which we realize is technically off topic. Unless you count Air Supply. --Hiya Swanhuyser
