Yelp's New List of Top 100 U.S. Restaurants Has Bewildering Bay Area Representation

Data. Sometimes it illuminates patterns and trends that the human brain didn't pick up on, and sometimes it's downright misleading. The latter is the case in Yelp's new list of "Top 100 Place to Eat" in the country, compiled by Yelp engineers.

"This method takes into account both star rating and number of reviews to reveal which spots not only have top notch ratings, but also which are most popular in the Yelp community," explains the blog post re: its methodology, which seems pretty logical, but as you will see from the choices it worked better in theory than in practice.

Here are the Bay Area must-try-before-you-die spots according to Yelp:

9. Gary Danko, San Francisco, CA
16. Cheese Board Pizza, Berkeley, CA
40. Lou's Cafe, San Francisco, CA
43. Roxie Food Center, San Francisco, CA
53. Arizmendi Bakery, San Francisco, CA
56. Peter's Kettle Corn, Oakland, CA
59. Ike's Place, San Francisco, CA
66. Wally's Cafe, Emeryville, CA
70. Little Luca Sandwich Shop & Deli, South San Francisco, CA
87. Kokkari Estiatorio, San Francisco, CA
93. The Codmother Fish and Chips, San Francisco, CA

Needless to say, if we were compiling a list of the absolute must-try-to-understand-San-Francisco spots, not many of these would make the cut. (Maybe Kokkari and Arizmendi?)

Stranger still, though Berkeley and Oakland only get one choice apiece, Sacramento has two:

30. The Kitchen Restaurant, Sacramento, CA 36. Café Rolle, Sacramento, CA

What do you think, do the Bay Area and Northern California have adequate representation when it comes to, in the words of Yelp, the "100 must-try spots in the US to get your #nomnom on"?

#70 on that list is accurate as hell and they are most definitely a small business.

I know #70 is accurate! The lines outside of that place are out of control.

How much are they charging to be on the list?

Yelp is an extortion operation. I don't care about their list.

It's Yelp. Their crowdsourced lists are as useless as their crowdsourced reviews.
