Sriracha Truffles and Four Barrel Coffee at Socola Chocolates

Hyper-trendy food combos are an easy way to go horribly awry, but at SoMa's Vietnamese-inspired Socola Chocolates, the Sriracha truffle works. As it melts in your mouth, right down to the last chili flake, it'll banish every dubious bacon mashup from your mind. And the space that houses it, full of busy workers and lain with pastel tiles, brightens up one of the grimmer, more depressing stretches of Folsom Street.

It can only accommodate a handful of people, but Socola has serious oasis potential. And in addition to serving Four Barrel coffee, there's a wide variety of confections available, from stout beer to Vietnamese espresso to slightly gummy guava to the wonderfully light raspberry champagne. Nearly everything finds a home in at least one of many gift box permutations -- and indeed, the online business is the likeliest reason for so many chocolatiers cheerily crammed front-and-center in the open kitchen. And most of the chocolates carry an image on the bottom -- that guava piece bears "Harriet the flying alpaca."

Having opened just before Valentine's Day, you can get an Aphrodite's Delight truffle box (four for $9.95, a dozen for $24.95). Move over, inedible chalky hearts! In a city still famous for Mrs. See's and the borderline-inedible Ghirardelli, Socola is a major improvement.

Great post. I especially love the "dubious bacon mashup" bit. I'm sorry I forgot to mention Four Barrel Coffee in my post…not being a coffee drinker, it wasn't on my radar so much! I did mention your yummy hot chocolate, though! :)

This is the equivalent to a bad musician sampling your favorite Led Zeppelin song.
