Those who have had the good fortune to visit New Orleans know the power of a good beignet. And while the landscape of San Francisco bears little resemblance to the streets of the French Quarter, some of our spheres of fried dough dusted in powdered sugar come awfully close to the best examples from the Big Easy. For more than 20 years, Just For You Café in the Dogpatch has been serving some of the city's best. Adorned with vintage, neon-hued posters and a giant marlin that keeps a constant, watchful eye on the dining room, the small but bustling breakfast and lunch spot is a favorite for those seeking amiable and attentive service, a good, strong cup of coffee, and most of all, absolutely delicious beignets.

The generous, golden-brown rectangles of deep-fried dough ($1.65 each or $4.25 for three) arrive at the table under a thick layer of powdered sugar that immediately conjures up images of Chicago's wintertime snowfall. The first bite reveals warm, airy dough punctuated with notes of crispness from a few extra seconds in the fryer. As you polish off your beignet in record time and shamelessly drag your finger across the plate to get the very last of the powdered sugar, you think to yourself: For this modest price, there is absolutely no shame in getting three.

Sorry to disappoint, but "beignet" is French for the lowly doughnut. If you grew up in Canada, you would have known that already.

Those are good, but it's hard to beat the beignet flight at Brenda's.

What I wouldn't give to have the recipe for the beignets at Alice Waters' defunct Cafe Fanny in Berkeley. Those were the absolute best beignets I've ever had.
