Bay Area pie-makers, it's your time to shine: During tomorrow's Harvest Festival at the Ferry Building, CUESA is hosting a pie-making contest (and yours truly is one of the judges). Any confident home baker can enter the contest tomorrow morning by bringing their best pie to the CUESA Classroom (under the white tents in front of the Ferry Building) between 8 and 10:30 a.m., along with a completed entry form.

Pies will be judged on appearance, texture, taste, and use of local, seasonal ingredients, as well as by their creativity and originality. Winners will be announced at 1 p.m., and you don't have to be present to win.

I'll be judging alongside John Birdsall (CHOW.com and former SFoodie editor), Rebecca Courchesne (Frog Hollow Farm), Shauna Des Voignes (Knead Patisserie), Lenore Estrada and Anna Derivi-Castellanos (Three Babes Bakeshop), Stephanie Rosenbaum (Bay Area Bites), John Lagier (Lagier Ranches), and Karen Heisler (Mission Pie).

The grand prize winner will receive a Sur La Table gift certificate, a Heath Ceramics serving platter, a gift certificate to Knead Patisserie, Market Coins, and a CUESA insulated tote bag and apron (value $200). Second place will get a Book Passage Gift Certificate, a gift certificate for Good Eggs, a Heath Ceramics serving platter, a gift certificate to Knead Patisserie, Market Coins, and a CUESA insulated tote bag and apron (value $100). Third place will bring you a gift certificate to Bluestem Brasserie, a Heath Ceramics serving platter, a gift certificate to Knead Patisserie, Market Coins, and a CUESA insulated tote bag and apron (value $50).

The pie contest is part of CUESA's annual harvest celebration (9 a.m.-1 p.m.), which will also include cooking demos, a cider-pressing, a weaving demonstration, a pie Q&A from Estrada and Derivi-Castellanos of Three Babes, and more, along with all the usual Saturday Market madness. Sounds like a sweet way to start the weekend.
