Find Under $5: Great Tacos at a Shopping Mall
While it's up for debate whether the very best things in life are indeed free, we do know that some wonderful things are very cheap.
We've all been there. It's Sunday afternoon. You're in the middle of running what feels like a million errands when hear something growl. You stop, put down the Vitamix you can't afford, and realize that it has been an ungodly number of hours since your last meal.
All too often, you're faced with the dismal reality of nothing but an Ikea meatball in sight. Not if you find yourself at the SOMA shopping center on 9th and Bryant. There, among Bed Bath & Beyond, Trader Joe's, and Nordstrom Rack, stands Publico UrbanTaqueria, a postage stamp-size eatery offering salvation for starving shoppers.

The straightforward menu offers just four filling options (three meat and one vegetarian) for the requisite selection of burritos, tortas, and tacos. For just $2.75, grab a fresh and filling carnitas street taco: two sturdy corn tortillas topped with slow-roasted Niman ranch pork shoulder, onions, cilantro, and salsa. And while it can't compete with that of La Taq or El Faralito, the addition of a squeeze of lime and a generous douse of hot sauce gets it close enough. Pair it with a homemade pineapple agua fresca, and for a grand total of less than $5, you will finish your shopping without any danger of dropping.
Publico Urbana Taqueria has one other location in Mission Bay. The SOMA location is open 7 days a week, 11 a.m.-7 p.m.
