Rip Current Brewing Makes Its S.F. Debut
At the end of the day, all craft breweries have homebrewers at the helm. Brewers don't just spring fully-formed from professional brewing programs; they typically spend years honing their craft in the garage before deciding to "go pro." That being said, most breweries aren't manned by homebrewers like Guy Shobe and Paul Sangster. Even before opening his own brewery, Sangster's garage resembled a professional operation with more stainless steel than normally belongs in a personal dwelling. The walls were burdened by the weight of his countless homebrewing medals, enough hardware to fill many a treasure chest.
When Sangster decided to open Rip Current Brewing with fellow homebrewing buddy Guy Shobe, he had already been publicly recognized in competition for nailing brews in every style category you can think of. Moreover, he had won homebrewing's highest honor: the Ninkasi award. It wasn't long before Sangster felt the itch to take his craft to the next level. In a jam-packed San Diego market that's on pace to have 100 operating breweries by the end of the year, Rip Current is one of a handful of new outfits quickly surging to the front of the pack.
This weekend, you'll have a preview of Sangster and Shobe's liquid art. While the beers aren't formally distributed in the Bay Area yet, Rip Current is putting one toe in the market with a tap takeover at City Beer Store. Sangster will be on hand to chat about his beers and provide inspiration to up-and-coming homebrewers.
