Canoe Club Pops Up in Oakland From State Bird Provisions Sous Chef

We hear Mendocino uni will be on the menu.
There is a new pop-up in town. Canoe Club is the brainchild of Steve Thorlton, sous chef of State Bird Provisions, Aleco Chigounis of Red Fox Coffee Merchants, and David Tai Bornoff of 1000 Glaciers.

On Saturday, August 31 at 3 p.m., the roving supper club will hold their inaugural dinner in the Oakland Hills. The meal will begin with passed appetizers and champagne, followed by five seated courses paired with local beer, wine provided by Selection Massale, and coffee from Red Fox.

The goal of the dinner is to bring friends together around the table; to that end, cell phone use is strongly discouraged.

While the trio would like to maintain a bit of mystery to the meal, we did get a sneak peek of the offerings. The first course of smoked eggplant with soft fried egg and pickled onion petals will be followed by Spanish octopus with summer melon and pardon peppers, and local spot prawns with smoked sausage.

The website promises "an unrestrained journey from the beer halls of Munich's Oktoberfest, to a backyard in North Carolina where a table covered in yesterday's newspaper awaits what's boiling in Dad's old pot," so take from that what you will.

Tickets are $125 per person, and include food, beverages, and tax, and are available on the pop-up's website.
