This Sunday, July 21, is National Ice Cream Day. It sounds like a totally fabricated holiday, a step away from something like a Beef Week that's touted by the Beef Council, but Ronald Reagan actually declared it so by presidential proclamation in 1984. So it's pretty legit.

Around town, some of S.F.'s most iconic scoop shops are celebrating accordingly. Here's where you can win one for the Gipper, in cone form:

Mitchell's (688 San Jose Ave.)
The 60-year-old favorite with the devoted Filipino fan base is rewarding the hordes with $1 off single-scoop cones and $1.70 off of double cones. (That includes you, ube-macapuno).

The Ice Cream Bar (815 Cole St.)
This Sunday at San Francisco's pharmaceutical-grade soda foundation, you can upgrade any soda to a float with the scoop of your choice, free. (Coffee cardamom, perhaps?)

Häagen-Dazs (865 Market St., in the Westfield Mall)
The faux-Danish chain is going one further and recognizing National Ice Cream Month -- which happens to be July -- with a new Dazzler, which is what they call three-scoop sundaes with toppings in between. This one's Midnight Cookies and Cream, made with hot fudge.

Bi-Rite Creamery (3692 18th St.)
Slightly too cool for school, Bi-Rite's opting to do a Sundae Week beginning Monday, July 22. Every day, they'll have a different sundae to offer. First up is a combo of strawberry balsamic and basil ice creams, strawberry compote and whipped cream. (Uh, yum!) Better save a spot in line now.

Reagan himself may have been partial to jelly beans, but ice cream was a crucial weapon in the fight against the Soviet Union. Continue to do your part, citizen!
