Peninsula Dining Update: El Granada's New Brewery, Osteria Coppa Opens for Brunch
What could be better than a summer day on the San Mateo County coast? Well, now the nano-brewery movement has reached El Granada and added another reason to hit the beach. Hop Dogma Brewing Co. is up and running from former home brewers Ethan Martini and Dan Littlefield. They're pouring A-Frame IPA, Bridge & Tunnel Bitter, and Flynn's Liberty Stout aged in whiskey barrels in a sparkling tap room that could double as a winery tasting room in Napa. Staying with the hoppy theme, the Peninsula and South Bay's summertime answer to S.F. Beer Week starts Sunday. It's time for the Silicon Valley Beer Week, a celebration of craft beer in the land of technology. Loads of events are scheduled each day at various locations through August 3. There are several special beer themed dinners, tap takeovers, and even a mezcal and Anchor Brewing event, combining two of the Bay Area's three favorite drinks (with Fernet Branca the third, of course). This weekend is the 35th edition of the Gilroy Garlic Festival, running today through Sunday July 28 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. More than 100,000 fervent garlic aficionados will descend upon Gilroy for the festivities, which include recipe contests and cook-offs. Of course, the big draw is the garlic-themed dishes. Start with garlic gator on a stick and continue with garlic calamari. Now San Mateo can wake up on weekends with one of its most beloved restaurants: The ever-popular Osteria Coppa has just started serving weekend brunch. The menu is much shorter than its evening counterpart. You'll find charcuterie and cheeses, a few antipasti, a trio of Neopolitan-style pizzas, and some new brunch dishes by chef Chanan Kamen, including baked eggs with a duck confit hash and salsa verde, and pannettone French toast with crispy bacon and Vin Santo-scented strawberries. 139 S B St., San Mateo; (650) 579-6021.
Meanwhile, Palo Alto no longer has an exclusively kosher restaurant after the recent closing of The Roast Shop. Known for its pastrami and other hand-carved meat sandwiches, The Roast Shop was the city's only fully kosher destination during its brief six month run. A sign on the shop's window says it's only open for private events and is no longer kosher.
