Mikkeller Bar Soft Opens Today

It's happening, you guys. The Tenderloin is becoming a fierce drinking destination. Between the Bourbon & Branch bar empire and Jasper's Corner Tap (a little further afield), some of the city's best cocktails have resided in the grimy 'loin. With the freshly minted Mikkeller Bar, dozens of taps of world-class beer are finally flowing in the TL.

Located on Mason street just off of Market, the bar is easily BART accessible. Upon stepping into the building you'll notice exposed brick walls and a minimalist warehouse structure adorned with antique street light fixtures and stereotypically goofy Mikkeller artwork. The bar boasts 40 taps of rare and respected brews. On today's soft open, you can expect gems such as Beachwood Resinator IPA, Prairie Ales Prairie Standard, and Jolly Pumpkin Calabaza Blanca. All of the taps are currently live, to be followed by a slew of bottled selections over the coming weeks.

About a quarter of the taplist is comprised of Mikkeller Brews. Our favorites include a rich, sweet milk stout, a musty, funky lambic called Spontanale, and a collaboration with Firestone Walker called Lil' Mikkel. The collaborative brew is a mildly acidic brew aged in Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc wine barrels from Opus One winery. The basement level boasts a 36-seat "sour room" (still under construction) that will showcase puckering treats from around the world and double as a private event space.

The kitchen serves up upscale gastropub fare with in-house sausages, charcuterie platters, and small plates such as Korean-style wings and fish and potato cakes. A handful of sandwiches and entrees round out the menu.

August 9: Grand Opening! Expect a curated selection of very special beers on tap.

August 10: Special Brewer's Lunch at 11am, and christening of the Tivoli Sour Room at 6pm.

August 11: Seven-course dinner paired with Mikkeller beers. Food prepared by visiting Danish Chef Jakob Mielcke.
