Beer Event Roundup: Abbot's Cellar Turns 1 and The Trappist Celebrates Saisons

Here's the thing about first birthday parties -- they never have enough alcohol. "Pin the tail on the donkey" is fun and all, but we prefer parties where the magician makes beer flow from a keg, rather than twisting up a puppy made of balloons. Thankfully, Abbot's Cellar has planned an appropriately boozy first birthday celebration, complete with a bottle sale straight from the cellar itself. To boot, The Trappist is dedicating this weekend's tap selections to one of the most complex styles out there, the almighty saison.

In addition to the cellar garage sale, Abbot's Cellar will have a special birthday menu with rare beers on tap. Break out your favorite party hat, work up an appetite for cake, and learn about the wonderful world of saisons, below:

Special Birthday Bites and Treats at Abbot's
Where: Abbot's Cellar, 742 Valencia (at 18th), 626-8700
When: July 26, 5:30 p.m.-close
Cost: A la carte
What: All diners will receive some special treats from the kitchen -- an amuse bouche of Chef Adam Dulye's signature bone marrow on rye with pastrami, and birthday cake truffles. Unique beers on tap include a special blend from Moonlight, a peach berliner-weisse from Marin Brewing, a barrel-aged strong ale from High Water, and more.

Cellar Sale at Abbot's

When: July 27, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
Cost: A la carte
What: One-stop shopping for vintage bottles that have been properly aged at sister restaurant Monk's Kettle. Here's a peek at some of the dozens of peaking gems that they've pulled from the cellar:

What: 20+ rare and obscure saisons on draft. This layered, rustic, and often tart style is a perfect summer quencher. Highlights include Sante Adairius Anais Saison, Logsdon Oak-Aged Bretta, and four brews from Prairie Ales. A partial list can be found here. Food specials include wild boar ribs and saison ceviche with grilled blue corn tortillas.
