Peninsula Dining Update: Angelica's Relaunches With Dinner and a Show
Most of the time you have to decide between an evening of entertainment or a dinner out. Now in Redwood City both options are under one roof at the newly renovated and re-opened Angelica's. The sprawling venue can accommodate any mood or weather report with two different indoor dining rooms outfitted with stages, plus an outdoor garden patio/stage. Diners can enjoy a quiet al fresco avocado BLT lunch or catch a tango show over a dinner of surf-and-turf crab cakes and duck breast in a cherry brandy sauce. The much-awaited reincarnation of San Mateo's Astaria Restaurant is here. After a prosperous decade-long run ended in the spring, owners closed the restaurant and have opened Three as a new contemporary dining room inside the long dormant historic Benjamin Franklin Hotel. The seasonally driven Californian menu leans less on rustic Italian dishes than Astaria and more on small plates made with ingredients from the rooftop organic garden. 50 E. 3rd Ave. San Mateo. 650-344-9444.
Rise and shine Palo Alto. Midtown has a new spot to wake up in the morning courtesy of the appropriately named Palo Alto Breakfast House. You can probably guess what its specialty is. Breakfast is served all day (or, that is, until the restaurant closes in early afternoon). The man behind the new spot is Josn Hsu of San Carlos's My Breakfast House, which is best known for French toast and corned beef hash. Hsu has taken over the departed Café Sophia with a casual, colorful, and airy place to start your morning. 2706 Middlefield Rd., Palo Alto.
Pizzeria Delfina isn't the only major opening coming in late summer to Burlingame. The team behind San Carlos' beloved Saffron Indian Bistro plan to open an impressive new venture The Mughal Room, with a TV celebrity from New Delhi as the chef. Parveen K. Sharma has arrived on the Peninsula after serving as a judge on Master Chef (India's version of Tom Colicchio, perhaps?). His menu will be inspired by the Mughal Empire of 16th and 17th century India and Pakistan. Kebabs will play a crucial role, alongside items boasting various Persian influences.
