Ben & Jerry is Creating a San Francisco Flavor and the Free Scoop Truck is Here
San Francisco is getting a signature ice cream from Ben & Jerry's, but here's the catch: the flavor doesn't exist yet. The Vermont-based company is relying on ice cream lovers to vote between two choices for eight categories, like Greek frozen yogurt or ice cream, and vanilla or chocolate. Nothing very San Franciscan about those choices.

The presence of S.F. on the Ben & Jerry's site at least harkens to some aspects of the city; of course there's an image of the Golden Gate, but also BART, Dolores Park, and a hipster with a bike in the Mission. Local companies TCHO chocolates and Kika's Treats also make an appearance in the add-in ingredient categories.
Besides relying on votes from visitors to their site, their press material notes "Ben & Jerry's has been tracking bikes in The Mission to help decide between the ingredients Fairtrade coffee and cinnamon. Each fixed-gear bike going down Valencia is a vote for Fairtrade coffee, while each freewheel bike is a vote for cinnamon."
Inside Scoop got to the heart of what flavors really represent San Francisco by interviewing various influential people in the city's foodie world. The ingredients they propose are much more city-centric, such as sourdough, beer, and rainbow sherbet. We're particularly fond of Jake Godby of Humphry Slocombe's response: "Fernet and pot ... And you could only afford it if you worked in tech."
Other cities also getting their own ice cream concoctions include Washington, D.C., New York, Seattle, and Portland, each with slightly altered choices for their creations. And S.F. doesn't stand alone in the fact the ingredients don't line up with the true foods of the given city. Portland has to choose between blueberries and cherries, while anyone who has ever stepped foot in that city knows they're all about the marionberry.
But, we voted anyway. Why not? Cookie dough may not represent San Francisco, but it's still a great ice cream ingredient. Voters also get a shot at naming the ice cream -- the choices are unlimited for that one. Now, how does one combine nudity, Muni, and fog into an ice cream name?
Vote for your Ben & Jerry's San Francisco creation on their City Churned page; polls close on June 30. The free cone truck is also in town as of today, follow them on their Twitter page and tell them where to park: @BenJerrysWest.
