Beer of the Week: Speakeasy Cultivate Festival Saison

Earlier today we covered much of the culinary content that you can look forward to at the Cultivate festival this weekend, so we'll stick to the boozier aspects. Some of the Bay's favorite craft breweries will be on hand, perfect for washing down that 4505 Smoked Brisket and other local pleasures. Chipotle has worked with local fixture Speakeasy Brewing to concoct a beer that will pair well with food and fits the season. The resulting one-off brew is Speakeasy's first shot at brewing a Saison, a rustic farmhouse ale with a yeasty nose and complex layers of spice, fruit, and herbal elements.

Speakeasy used Belgian pilsner and pale malts alongside Canadian honey malts for a touch of sweetness that is subtle enough to let the yeast shine through. Moderate to high carbonation allows for a palate cleansing effect that's perfect for a day of food sampling. German Magnum and Hallertauer hops contribute a grassy earthiness that offsets the addition of Elderflower towards the end of the brewing process. Speakeasy has gained a reputation for their West Coast hop bombs and stellar dark beers, and we're happy to see them take a stab at Belgian-inspired brewing. This beer is perfect for anybody who wants to experience a uniquely American approach to traditional farmhouse brew.

Be sure to sample the beer alongside other local wares at this Saturday's festival at Golden Gate Park in Hellman Hollow from 11am to 7pm, or until the beer runs dry.
