Taste of Potrero Event Raises Funds for At-Risk Elementary School
More than 28 of San Francisco's top restaurants and bars will be serving their tasty wares at this year's Taste of Potrero fundraiser on Thursday, May 9. This third annual event benefits Daniel Webster Elementary School, a public school in Potrero Hill that was scheduled for closure in 2006, but has been able to stay alive through fundraising.

San Francisco heavy-hitters, including State Bird Provisions (SF Weekly's best new restaurant of 2012), Beretta, Hard Water, Lolinda, Smitten Ice Creamery, Wise Sons Deli, Commonwealth, Trick Dog bar, Hi-Lo BBQ, and many other local favorites will be joining their flavorful forces from 7 p.m. to midnight at SomArts, located on 934 Brannan St. They will be raising funds for the vulnerable school where 50 percent of its students are socially and economically disadvantaged and 60 percent are in the free and reduced lunch program.
100 percent of the proceeds from Thursday night's event will go to the Daniel Webster PTA to fund for a math program, literacy program, two classroom teachers, a computer teacher, and a PE instructor.
In its first year, the Taste of Portrero fundraiser, created by "badass" Potrero Hill parents, raised almost $40,000 for the school, which went towards adding basic supplies, arts enrichment and a part time literacy specialist. In 2012, the effort raised more than $90,000.
"We need to keep supporting our kids as much as we can," says Jenny Sagström, an event organizer. "And it's just a really fun event."
A general admission all you can eat ticket is $100 and event organizers are expecting more than 800 attendees. An additional hour from 6 to 7 p.m. is reserved for $200 VIP ticket holders. Tickets are available on the Taste of Potrero website.
