Front to back: Cognac, Hemingway, and pisco punch at SOMA's new Novela.
Literature is the theme at this clubby new bar at Mission and Third from Kate Bolton (Maven) and Alex Smith (Gitane). Drinks are named after characters from novels, like the Leopold Bloom (hibiscus gin, pineapple syrup, mint) and the Atticus Finch (bourbon, Earl Grey honey, balsamic bitters).

One wall of the bar is taken up with a library lit up in neon (books are, in case you were interested, for display only); the rest of the space is decorated with low-slung couches, high bar tables, and the usual stuff you'd expect to find in a SOMA lounge. It's not a place to cozy up and read a novel, necessarily, but it is a place to go if you want to drink punch.

There are six punches on tap, served by the pitcher ($45, serves 6-8), flight of three ($14), or by the glass ($10). We got tipsy on the house punch, Hemingway's 'Code Hero' Punch, a lethally delicious combination of three whiskeys, maraschino, Pimm's, Earl Grey, grapefruit, and lemon.

But we also enjoyed a few of the seasonally rotating flavors, including the pisco, a combination of strawberry, tarragon, and fennel that tasted like a pink Starburst (a compliment of the highest order), and the cognac, a complex drink with cherry, lavender, and citrus.

We have a feeling Buster Bluth would approve.
