Big Gay Ice Cream Bringing Soft Serve to Cultivate Festival

Relegated to buffet cafeterias, soft-serve ice cream is not getting the respect it deserves, said Douglas Quint, co-founder of Big Gay Ice Cream.

This truck is coming to San Francisco. 

"Bi-Rite is one of the few places that tries to do it well," he says in reference to the popular Mission creamery. "Most people don't care -- it's an afterthought."

Quint and his partner Bryan Petroff are bringing their experiments in soft serve, like "Salty Pimp," a vanilla swirl with dulce de leche, sea salt covered and chocolate dip, to Golden Gate Park for the Chipotle Cultivate Festival on Saturday June 8.

"I don't think there is anyone with more experience in dressing up vanilla and chocolate than us," he says. "Vanilla and chocolate stand alone great but you can go on many directions."

Like mixing vanilla ice cream with toasted curried coconut or blending spicy hot chocolate mixed with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, cayenne pepper and shaved chocolate.

The couple is renting a truck in Los Angeles, where they plan to set shop for a few days, before driving up to the city -- its San Francisco premiere.

As the name suggests, two gay men in New York started the frozen dessert company in 2009 on a whim. Four year later, the company has won international acclaim and opened two ice cream parlors in the East and West Villages in Manhattan.

"I started a Facebook page called 'My big gay ice cream truck' because that summed up what we were doing for the summer," Quint said."Because that name made everyone laugh, we kept it."
