Customers and vendors mingle at a previous New Taste in St. Gregory's.
This Saturday, March 16, brings the spring edition of New Taste Market, a gathering of artisan food vendors and food-minded folk in St. Gregory's Church on Potrero Hill, with proceeds benefiting the Food Bank. And this time around there's a beer and wine garden along with 35 vendors selling everything from hot meals to the omnipresent (in S.F. anyway) pickles.

This is the second New Taste under the helm of SF Examiner food critic Jesse Hirsch, who says that while the December market focused more on gifty, take-home items for the holidays, Saturday's event is skewing in the other direction with much more prepared food to devour on-site. "Come hungry," he says, adding that he's been encouraging vendors to offer small portions (for proportionally small prices) so visitors can try multiple bites without fear of getting too full or spending too much.

There's also a ton of new vendors -- in fact, there were so many applications that Hirsch had to turn some away. Newcomers include Rascal and Rae, a brand new venture from two female chefs formerly from Quince and Oliveto; Jesse Branstetter, the chef at Cafe'Q in Alameda; Sous Buerre, French-inflected California cuisine that was formerly a pop-up inside a Mission coffee shop (also opening a brick-and-mortar in the city this year); and java from Hearth Coffee Roasters.

Returning visitors include Marla Bakery; the Art of Arancini, Jablow's Meats, and Slow Hand BBQ, which Hirsch describes as "not to be hyperbolic, but the most transcendent pork ribs I've ever had in my life."

Wine will be provided by Bluxome Street Winery; beer will be from Almanac Beer Co.

Other vendors include The Uncommon Pickle, Sunny Side Biscuits, a cookbook signing by author Sarah Billingsley, and a kids' food craft table sponsored by Christopher Books.

New Taste is happening on Saturday, March 16 from 12-5 p.m. at St. Gregory's Church (500 DeHaro at Mariposa).
