When did the Pantone color guide become the hippest thing ever? Is it Pinterest's fault? Anyway, along with new Mission bar Trick Dog's Pantone-based cocktail menu, the Laughing Squid alerted us to a new product: Beertone, a Pantone-inspired beer reference guide that organizes brews by color swatch.

Despite the gimmicky idea, Beertone looks pretty cool, actually -- a fun way to learn more about beer and see the color gradients of different brewing styles without having to read a book on the subject. The project is the brainchild of Daniel Eugster and Alexander Michelbach, a pair of advertising men in Switzerland who seem to be doing it for fun in their free time. "With Beertone we are trying to create something that would be useful and fun for everyone that likes color and beer, like we do," says Michelbach on the website.

Each card contains quite a bit of detail about each beer: a picture of the bottle, info about the brewery and the beer itself (ABV, tasting notes), and the color codes if you want to replicate your favorite brew's hue on your own ... which, incidentally, would be an inspired decorating scheme for a new brewpub.

Currently you can pre-order the guide to 200 Swiss brews for $39 USD, or you can pay 10 or 20 more bucks for a Beertone-branded stein, stickers, beer mats, and more. A guide to Brazilian beers is promised to come by "Carnaval 2013."
