Vietnamese soul food will be served at a Mexican restaurant on Jan. 7.
Saigon Soul Pop-Up Dinner

Where: Regalito Rosticeria, 3481 18th St. (at Valencia), 503-0650
When: Mon., Jan. 7, 5-9 p.m.
Cost: $45 for full tasting menu (purchase in advance via Eventbrite)

The rundown: Hey, it's 2013, so the concept of a Vietnamese soul food pop-up inside a Mission Mexican restaurant should be anything but a surprise. For this occasion, mobile street food vendor Bicycle Bánh Mì is collaborating with chef Seth Stowaway, who cooks for Bar Agricole and HapaSF, to fuse American Southern culinary sensibilities with traditional Vietnamese classics.

They've devised a five course tasting menu that includes items such as shrimp, grits, and spare ribs with Vietnamese herbs, spicy beef noodle soup with collard greens and pineapple-mint relish, and rice paper rolls with Dungeness crab and chicories.

Tip: Menu items ($12-15) can be ordered individually for walk-ins who haven't purchased the five-course option in advance.
