Elvis: Where to Eat Like Him on His Birthday
Need an excuse to go crazy on the carbs today? It's Elvis Presley's 78th birthday and at least one Bay Area restaurant is breaking out the extra calories to celebrate. Get ready for the holy trinity of his favorite flavors -- peanut butter, bacon, and banana -- re-imagined in often obscenely good and unhealthy ways.![]()

Palo Alto restaurant Calafia is taking the occasion most seriously, with a special menu of Presley-tributing treats served today only. Chef Charlie Ayers is offering a grilled peanut butter, bacon and banana sandwich, long known to be one of the late star's favorite atrocities. Ayers also has fried chicken biscuits and Southern milk gravy with mashed potatoes and cole slaw, and jelly donuts for dessert. Burp.
If Palo Alto is too much of a drive today, there are plenty of options in the city of San Francisco. Consider the bacon-bombed King cookie at Market & Rye, which also contains chopped peanuts, banana chips, and sea salt, or the Elvis Roll (tempura shrimp, avocado, cucumber, crab, and crispy potato bits) at Ace Wasabi's Rock-N-Roll Sushi. There's also a sandwich called The Elvis (peanut butter, banana, and bacon) at American Cupcake and at Burger Urge (peanut butter, fried bananas, and bacon), among other edible Elvis offerings around town.
Alas, it's not available today, but Humphry Slocombe Ice Cream occasionally offers scoops of Elvis: The Fat Years (bacon peanut brittle in banana ice cream). It'll be a good excuse to belatedly toast the king when it's back on the menu.
