Eat black-eyed peas on Jan. 1 for good luck throughout the year.
The Atlantic published a fun rant today: The Worst Holiday: New Year's Eve Is Over-hyped and Anti-Climactic. We tend to agree. While other countries have long lists of traditions, feasts, and prescribed foods, Americans don't have much besides drinking and watching the ball drop while Kathy Griffin awkwardly fondles Anderson Cooper in Times Square. Still, if there's one tradition that exists in this country, it's the good old New Year's Day brunch, where we soak up all the bad humors from the night before and hopefully gobble up some good luck while we're at it. Here are a few spots offering special menus to kick off 2013 in style.

Need some good luck in 2013? The Front Porch is serving a New Year's buffet that includes black-eyed peas -- considered an extra-lucky food to eat on the first day of the new year -- along with its usual stick-to-your-ribs Southern favorites and plenty of bubbly and other cocktails.

Wise Sons Deli is usually closed on Tuesdays, but will be open tomorrow for a very special brunch offering "Jewish hangover cures" like matzo ball-soup (the world's greatest cure-all), shakshuka (a baked eggs situation), chicken schnitzel, and burgers and hot sandwiches. Eater SF has the full menu.

Foreign Cinema will also be serving a special New Years Day brunch, offering its famous hangover soup (a poached farm egg in a restorative tomato-y broth), baguette French toast, locally renowned Ceasar bloody Mary, and more.

Absinthe in Hayes Valley is jumping on the New Year's brunch bandwagon, offering a special menu that includes Scotch eggs and Kurobuta pork pozole along with the usual menu of brunchables and expertly mixed cocktails.

SoMa StrEat Food Park is hosting a New Year's brunch with eight food trucks offering brunch items -- including Sanguchon, Adams Grub Truck, Bao and Bowl, La Pastrami, Gyros on Wheels, Smokin Warehouse, Golden Waffle, and Frozen Kuhsterd -- along with $12 bottomless mimosas.

And if you want to enjoy your day off by getting out of town, Joanne Weir's Copita in Sausalito will be serving up chilaquiles, enchiladas with scrambled eggs, and a 24-hour carnitas torta, along with hair-of-the-dog favorites like micheladas, bloody Marys, and bloody sangrias.
