Shirt Pocket Pies by Desperation Bakehouse.
Steven Feuer, a recent San Francisco Baking Institute graduate, has launched Desperation Bakehouse. His lead product is the Shirt Pocket Pie, a round offering about the size of a squished baseball, and he's playing with savory and sweet flavors. When we encountered his table at the recent New Taste Marketplace, he offered roasted carrot with dill, Moroccan lamb with sweet potato, and apple with smoky bacon pies. We tried the latter and appreciated the tender, flaky pastry and a nice subtle balance of flavor rather than bacon as novelty dominator.

The business is currently seeking coffee houses and cafes to stock the pies. In the meantime, the next opportunity to catch Desperation Bakehouse is at the final Underground Market starting at 6 p.m. at SOMArts Cultural Center on December 22.
