Batter Bakery offers two holiday cookie decoratng classes this month.
Macy's & Batter Bakery Holiday Cookie Decorating Class

Where: Cellar Demo Kitchen at Macy's Union Square, 170 O'Farrell (at Powell), 397-3333
When: Sat., Dec. 8, 2-4 p.m.
Cost: $20 (purchase in advance via Eventbrite)

The rundown: Batter Bakery founder Jen Musty leads a fun session breaking down how to make, mix, and tint royal icing, techniques on how to ice cookies, and how to decorate in finer detail using ingredients like sanding sugar, chocolate, and sprinkles. Students will take home the icing recipe as well as the four cookies they decorate in class; four are holiday-shaped shortbread and two are gingerbread. It's for a good cause, too: Proceeds of this class will benefit Project Open Hand.

Pie Workshop

Where: Pot + Pantry, 593 Guerrero (at 18th St.), 206-1134
When: Wed., Dec. 12, 7 p.m.
Cost: $40 (purchase in advance via Brown Paper Tickets)

The rundown: Bike Basket Pies founder Natalie Galatzer has wound down her pie baking business and has started offering intimate workshops at the cute Mission District kitchenware shop Pot + Pantry. She limits the session to just 10 people, which gives students ample opportunity to grill her for tips and techniques. Take-homes include the Bike Basket Pies recipe booklet, ingredients, dough made during class, and dough blender to make more. Act fast if this sounds interesting. Galatzer is holding the workshop this week as well and it (like its November predecessor) sold out quickly.

Holiday Cookie Decorating Class

Where: Batter Bakery/Square Meals, 2127 Polk (at), 647-1069
When: Sat., Dec. 15, 3:30-5:30 p.m.
Cost: $40 (purchase in advance via Eventbrite)

The rundown: An extension of the class Musty is offering at Macy's, she'll cover all the same basic techniques but you'll get more cookies (10 total) and more in-depth instruction and practice doing detailing on some pre-iced shortbreads. Additionally, there will be ideas for holiday gift packaging and the cookies you work on will also be packed for safe travels home. Plus spiced cider!
