Better Start Stockpiling Those Twinkies: Hostess Announces Plans to Shut Down
Twinkies were supposed to be indestructible. But today Hostess, the company responsible for beloved brands like Twinkies, Cupcakes, and Wonder Bread, declared that the nationwide worker strike earlier this week has put the company out of business. "We deeply regret the necessity of today's decision, but we do not have the financial resources to weather an extended nationwide strike," said CEO Gregory F. Rayburn in a statement on the Hostess corporate website. Hostess will move immediately to close its doors at bakeries and distribution centers across the U.S. and begin laying off its 18,500 workers, including several close to home at the Oakland bakery. And America wept.

But all is not necessarily lost. It's still unclear whether this means the absolute end of Twinkies, Cupcakes, Ding Dongs, Sno Balls, and all those beloved, iconic, so-bad-they're-good snack cakes, or if another company will come in and buy all of Hostess' assets, which it plans to sell to the highest bidder. Let's hope for the latter.
In the meantime, you owe it to yourself to head to your nearest convenience store and buy a pack of Twinkies today, even if you haven't had one since childhood. Eat it slowly, enjoying that spongy yellow cake and sweet, soft pastry cream filling, knowing that this treat that's been part of American life since 1930 could go extinct in your lifetime. Take a quiet moment to say goodbye, and then move on. You can always make your own, after all.
