The Most Crucial (and Beery) Vote of the Season
We've heard there are some voting opportunities for Bay Area citizens over the next couple weeks. Rumblings of district supervisors, mind-boggling propositions and somebody called the "Commander in Chief" abound. It sure is a pity that those folks are being overshadowed by the biggest voting event of the season - the SF Homebrewer's Guild Presidential Honey Ale Competition!Jason Henry SFHG President Chris Cohen brewing his entry.

The last time we checked in, the contest had just been announced. Since then, SF Homebrewers Guild founder Chris Cohen has graciously allowed SFoodie to play the role of brewmaster's assistant while he crafted his own competition entry. If you're into tubing, pumps, and shiny metal objects, then Cohen's garage brewing lair might be your happy place. After steeping our grains and sipping on homebrewed beers for a bit, Cohen kicked his enviable brew system into full gear, reaching a full boil in no time flat (envision Captain Picard holding court on the bridge of the Enterprise -- "Brew Kettle, engage!").
While entrants in the competition are working from the same White House-published recipe, there will naturally be a wide variance in outcome based on slight differences in ingredient sourcing and a broad spectrum of brewing technique employed. In an effort to capture the terroir of the Bay Area, Cohen decided to use honey from local producer Bay Area Bee Company. Once the grain-infused water, malt, honey, and hops had spent an hour of quality time together in the pot, Cohen chilled the unfermented liquid, transferred it to a glass jug (called a "carboy"), and added the yeast. When we left the home-brewery, the brew was just hours away from beginning its bubbly fermentation process. Our collaborative entry.
The final details for the competition have been released, and the public has a chance to taste Cohen's White House Honey Ale against other competition entries. The event is capped at 200 guests, so act quickly to secure a ticket. Stay tuned for SFoodie's coverage of the event and competition winners.
