Morris Kitchen
Preserved lemon syrup makes everything better.
For the past year, we've been smuggling home bottles of preserved lemon syrup from Brooklyn's Morris Kitchen. Bi-Rite Market was an early supporter of this company, carrying its ginger and spiced apple syrups, and now stocks the preserved lemon so we don't have to risk exploding liquid in luggage anymore.

The still-young and small company is a collaboration between siblings Tyler and Kari Morris; Tyler works as a sous chef for April Bloomfield at the Breslin in New York, and Kari worked in the front of the house at San Francisco's Foreign Cinema for three years while attending art school.

The pair have crafted a particularly addictive and concentrated syrup with the preserved lemon. It's so much more complex than just the citrus flavor, with pronounced notes of pink peppercorn and cardamom. It's super soothing in hot water as an alternative to tea, and livens up still or sparkling cold water. Cocktails have an instant air of sophistication, even if you don't know what you're doing with a shaker. It's also got a nice versatility to use in foods -- it serves well in a vinaigrette, as the basis for a marinade, or drizzled over yogurt or ice cream.
